Have you ever felt utterly drained, as if the spark of life has dimmed? This sensation isn’t just in your head — it’s in your body, mind, and spirit. In yogic philosophy, this spark is known as prana, the vital life force that flows through us. In Chinese traditions, it’s referred to as chi. This energy is what keeps us vibrant, resilient, and connected to our true selves. But like any resource, it can become depleted. Fortunately, it can also be replenished.
Neuroscience and psychology also speak to this concept, though in different terms. Studies on mental fatigue and stress show how the body and brain enter survival mode when energy reserves run low. Over time, chronic depletion can lead to burnout, poor health, and emotional instability. As Brene Brown famously said, “You cannot serve from an empty vessel.” If our vitality is compromised, it’s not just us who suffer — it affects everyone we interact with. Yoga Sutras of Patanjali reminds us:
“When the breath is steady, so is the mind.
As the mind calms, the energy flows freely."
This timeless wisdom underscores the importance of reconnecting with our inner energy to thrive.

How Energy Gets Depleted
Our energy drains in many ways, often without us even noticing - until we are seriously depleted. Chronic stress, lack of quality sleep, overcommitment, poor nutrition, and even holding onto negative emotions are all culprits. As mothers, caregivers, and busy individuals, it’s easy to ignore the signs until we hit a wall. For me, that wall used to appear as snapping at my kids over small things or feeling utterly exhausted after minor social outings. My body would whisper — and sometimes shout — that I was running on empty.
Over time, I learned to listen. My frustration and fatigue weren’t failures; they were signals. Learning to say NO to certain work commitments and social events was an act of self-preservation, not selfishness. As a mother, protecting my energy became essential to being present and responsive to my children’s needs with patience and capacity.
Recharging Your Vital Life Force
The good news is that we can nurture and restore our vitality through mindful practices. Neuroscience confirms what ancient yogis knew: deliberate habits of rest and renewal can reset the nervous system and recharge our energy stores.
Yin Yoga: Cultivating Stillness
Yin yoga helps us slow down, holding poses for several minutes to release tension and create space for energy to flow. By embracing stillness, we connect deeply to our body’s needs and learn to notice even the most subtle cues.
Gentle Flow Yoga: Encouraging Movement
Gentle flows reinvigorate the body and promote the circulation of prana, balancing effort with ease.
Setting Intentions: Aligning with Purpose
Research shows that mindfulness and intention-setting can significantly improve focus and motivation. Starting the day with a clear purpose aligns our energy with what truly matters.
Balance Pose Flow: Building Strength and Resilience
Balancing poses require focus and stability, teaching us how to center ourselves in the face of life’s demands.
Yoga Nidra: Deep Rest
Yoga nidra, or yogic sleep, is a guided meditation that brings the body into a state of profound relaxation. It’s a powerful tool for restoring the nervous system.
Connection to Your True Self: Empowerment Through Awareness
True vitality comes from living authentically. Practices that foster self-awareness, such as journaling or meditation, help us align with our values and goals.
